Coffee company bands together country's entrepreneurs in annual show of
support for the little guy

TORONTO, Oct. 29 /CNW/ - Canada's favourite specialty coffee brand has
teamed up with other Canadian franchisers to throw its weight behind the
country's small businesses, encouraging consumers to spend their money at
locally owned, independent establishments.
The popular café company, which supports more than 360 independently
owned and operated Second Cup franchises throughout Canada, has declared Oct.
30 Support Your Local Small Business Day during which Canadians are being
asked to spend their money at locally owned and operated independent
businesses.
"Entrepreneurs in Canada work harder than any other profession, because
they have to continually push their boundaries and be more ambitious in order
to remain competitive with 'the big guys' in their area," said Second Cup
President Bruce Elliot. "We want Canadians to show their support to all the
2.3 million hard working small business owners out there and demonstrate their
appreciation for the valuable contributions entrepreneurs make to local
economies and communities throughout the country."
Canadian small businesses have generated the most jobs in the national
economy for seven of the past 10 years and currently employ an estimated 5.1
million people. These include numerous franchises, which are locally owned and
operated businesses, though many Canadians perceive them to be corporate shops
due to their association with nationally recognized brands.
Quebec in particular is critically dependant on the success of small
business, as 98 per cent of its enterprises are made up of less than 100
employees. The province's entrepreneurs are some of the hardest working in the
country with more than half putting in more than 60 hours every week.
"Quebec's small business owners demonstrate the ambition of independent
business owners across the country," said Malcolm Houser, Executive Vice
President and Chief Operating Officer of the UPS Store, which has teamed up
with Second Cup to applaud small business owners in Canada. "We are asking
Canadians to discover the competitive pricing and superior service of Canada's
small businesses by directing their spending for one day in particular to
locally owned businesses and franchises."
The initiative comes on the heels of Small Business Month, which comes to
a close at the end of October and celebrates the country's small businesses,
which make up 98 per cent of Canadian commerce.
